Missoula County Offers Free Events to Plan for Emergencies with Livestock

The Missoula County Extension Office and the Office of Emergency Management are hosting three events in June to help residents prepare for emergencies with their animals. The following events are free and open to the public. Registration is required and available online at the links below.

  • Preparing Your Animals for the Next Emergency: Thursday, June 12, 5 to 8 p.m., Big Sky Horse Park. Hands-on demonstrations and clinics by the Missoula Rural Fire District, staff from the Montana Department of Livestock and others. Snacks provided.
  • Practical Resources for Animal Emergency Planning: Monday, June 16, 7 to 8 p.m., Zoom webinar. Speakers include Nick Holloway, deputy director of Disaster and Emergency Services in for OEM, and Natalie Sullivan, Agriculture, Equine and Livestock extension agent for the Extension Office.
  • A Biosecurity Update for Horses and Livestock in Western Montana: Saturday, June 28, from 12 to 2:30 p.m. at the GW Marks Exploration Center (1075 South Ave. W). Features a lecture from Dr. Brenee Peterson, Montana Department of Livestock veterinarian. Lunch provided.

“Owning animals in Missoula County means being prepared for emergencies in every season,” Sullivan said. “You never know when an event like a wildfire, flood, power outage, road closure or disease outbreak could impact your property. This series of events is designed to help any resident make a plan for their livestock and pets.”

Members of the media are invited to the June 12 demonstration at the Big Sky Horse Park. Topics include loading a horse in a trailer during an emergency, fire extinguisher needs in barns, veterinary first aid kits and more.
