Increased Rebate Available for Energy Efficient Water Heaters
Posted on May 14, 2025
Residents throughout Missoula County are now eligible to receive a $1,435 rebate for replacing water heaters in their homes with certain energy-efficient alternatives, after the Missoula County Commissioners and Missoula City Council voted to increase the individual rebate amount.
Residents who buy and install qualifying heat pump water heaters can apply online to receive the rebate by submitting proof of purchase and installation. Heat pump technology is more energy efficient than traditional appliances. A list of the hundreds of qualifying water heaters can be found online.
“For many households, heat pump water heaters would help them see large savings on their electric bills, but the up-front cost of installing the appliance can sometimes be hard for people to manage,” said Devin Filicicchia, the City of Missoula’s electrification specialist. “This expanded rebate will help make it possible for more local families to lower their energy use and decrease their monthly expenses.”
The rebate is part of a federally funded program the City and County launched in 2023, which originally provided up to $575 in individual rebates. The expanded rebate is made possible by an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant the City received from the Department of Energy, which adds $45,920 to the City-County rebate program. Funds will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be spent by June 30, 2026. There is no income restriction or limit. Residents may also be eligible for additional rebates from their electric utility, as well as federal tax credits through the Inflation Reduction Act.
“The rebate is available whether you’re switching from an old electric appliance or from gas,” said Svein Newman, Missoula County’s climate action program manager. “If you’re curious, the County’s new Home Upgrade Hub can help you figure out if a heat pump water heater is right for your home. These won’t be the right choice for everybody but could help a lot of people make their homes more efficient, affordable, healthy and comfortable.”
