Paid Time Off

Missoula County offers paid time off to employees following state law as outlined in MCA 2-18-600. Additional details are listed below:

For full-time employees, sick leave accrues at the rate of one day per month or 3.69 hours per pay period. Sick leave can be used as soon as it is accrued. There is no waiting period for new employees.

Sick leave may be used for the following: 

  • Injury or illness of an employee
  • Injury or illness of a dependent or immediate family member
  • Medical appointments for the employee
  • Medical appointments for a dependent
  • Bereavement leave for immediate family

Part-time employees receive prorated sick leave benefits.

Vacation time for full-time employees is earned according to the following schedule:

  • First ten years of employment: 1.25 days per month, 4.62 hours per pay period 
  • 11 to 15 years of employment: 1.5 days per month, 5.54 hours per pay period
  • 16 to 20 years of employment: 1.75 days per month, 6.46 hours per pay period
  • 20+ years of employment: 2 days per month, 7.38 hours per pay period

Vacation leave can be used as soon as it is accrued. There is no waiting period for new employees.

Annual vacation leave may be accumulated not to exceed two times the annual vacation accrual rate at the end of any calendar year. Part-time employees receive prorated vacation leave benefits. 

Employees are entitled to a maximum of six continuous work weeks of paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. Eligible employees are any employee employed at least 180 days. Employees working part time may be eligible for paid parental leave. Requests to use this leave should be submitted in writing to the employee’s supervisor and Human Resources Department with as much advance notice as possible.

Full-time, non-union employees are eligible for eight hours of paid personal leave per fiscal year. Employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement will get additional personal days. Please refer to the specific union's agreement for more information.

Regular, part-time employees scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week are eligible for personal leave on a prorated basis. Personal leave does not roll over from year to year. No cash reimbursement is given for unused leave. Eligibility date depends on terms of the employees’ collective bargaining agreement.

All employees are paid for the following holidays:

  • New Year's Day (Jan. 1)
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Third Monday in Jan.)
  • President's Day (Third Monday in Feb.)
  • Memorial Day (last Monday in May)
  • Independence Day (July 4)
  • Labor Day (First Monday in Sept.)
  • Indigenous Peoples' Day (Second Monday in Oct.)
  • Election Day (First Tuesday in Nov. even-numbered years only)
  • Veteran's Day (Nov. 11)
  • Thanksgiving (Fourth Thursday in Nov.)
  • Christmas Day (Dec. 25)
